Surrogacy lecture

A number of gay individuals and couples think positively about having children. Some choose to adopt - and BLAGG held on 15 September 2011 a joint event with Gay and Lesbian Association of Doctors and Dentists (GLADD) at which Andrew Leary-May of New Family Social spoke about gay adoption. This year, we are to hold a lecture on the option of surrogacy, at which all are welcome to attend.

Women’s event with Gill Phillips, the Guardian

6.30pm, the Bridge Bar in Grays Inn.

This event is open to any women who would like to attend and non-lawyers are very welcome too, so please feel free to bring friends, colleagues and partners.

There will be a short speech on the evening from Gill Philips from the Guardian, whom we are extremely lucky to have attending to speak to us about her experiences as a gay woman in the legal workplace. We are also very grateful to HHJ Dight, Lead Equality and Diversity Judge who has kindly agreed to attend to tell us a little bit more about his role and to assist with any queries you might have about a career in the judiciary.

First and foremost, however, as BLAGG's first women's event this is an opportunity for like minded professional women to relax after work, have a friendly space to socialise in and perhaps meet some friends and contacts - and if the event is a success we will endeavour to do more events just for women.

We have been lucky enough to secure a lovely venue for the event due to the generosity of Gray's Inn. The event will take place in the Bridge Bar in Gray’s Inn from 6.30pm. It is a lovely light bar with gorgeous views of Gray's Inn square, which has just opened as part of the refurbishment of the Inn. The bar is accessible from Gray's Inn Road and High Holborn. From High Holborn walk through the arch in between 'Rymans the stationers' and the 'City of Yorke Pub', through the gate and towards the Hall. The entrance is on the left hand side. Walk straight along and you will see a new bridge/arch above you with a bay window. If you get into Gray's Inn Square you have gone too far. There is usually a lovely gentleman doorman in uniform to point you in the right direction if you get lost! Once inside, climb the stairs and take a right.

This spring we are holding another of our popular and oversubscribed dinners at Chez Gerard. In past years, we have invited popular senior judges and barristers to address us. This year is no exception and we are delighted that Anthony Hayden QC has agreed to attend.

Anthony Hayden is a family law specialist with many accolades. He was recently made Head of Chambers at St John’s Buildings. He is also a recorder of the Crown Court and a Deputy High Court Judge. He has been described as a ‘smooth operator and a polished advocate’ and, in true Mancunian fashion, he is a ‘Diamond of the North’

A pervading force in the north-west and beyond, we welcome this Star of the Bar to shower us with his wit and anecdotes.

London Lesbian and Gay switchboard party

London Lesbian and Gay Switchboard would like to invite BLAGG members to an event we are holding to celebrate our 38th birthday, and to announce how we are expanding our services this year.

Please come and enjoy drinks, nibbles and a chance to meet some of our volunteers, celebrity patrons, and supporters at our building near Angel from 6.30pm to 9pm on March 6th, with short speeches from our patrons at 7pm.

We are a helpline with more than 180 volunteers and only one paid staff member, we talk to about 30,000 callers a year, and we provide huge value for a small public grant, which we get for our HIV prevention work.

The gathering will be very much a social event, but if you wish you will have a chance to see round our building and find out more about our services, and how we are going beyond phone work to reach our service users through new media such as instant messaging, online chat and email.

Jonathan Cooper OBE, international human rights barrister will attend a discussion about the international development of human rights as they relate to gay rights. The subject of the discussion is sure to be extremely interesting and challenging.

The Tenth Stonewall Lecture

You are invited to attend the tenth Stonewall Lecture: Sexual orientation and the Equality Act 2010: What next?

Organised by the Law Society and the Bar Council in association with the InterLaw Diversity Forum, the Bar Lesbian and Gay Group, and Stonewall.

It will take place on Monday 14 November at 6PM in the Common Room of the Law Society 113 Chancery Lane London WC2A 1PL

The lecture will be delivered by Dame Janet Gaymer DBE QC (Hon.), Employment Lawyer; member of the Speaker’s Committee for the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority and Co Chair of the Consultation Steering Panel for the Legal Education and Training Review in England and Wales (Review 2020).

The lecture will be chaired by The Rt. Hon. Lord Justice Etherton and the vote of thanks will be proposed by Ben Summerskill, Chief Executive of Stonewall.

The lecture will be followed by a reception in the Reading Room of the Law Society.

Legal Advice Centre anniversary

On 2 July 2011, join members of the Bar Council, BLAGG, Law Society, ILEX, LAGLA and Interlaw as we once again process through the streets of London, celebrating LGBT diversity in the profession and promoting “Equality under the Law”.

We will be gathering outside the Queen’s Head & Artichoke pub between 11.30-11.45 am on Saturday 2nd July. It is on the corner of Albany and Longford Streets. Longford Street is an extension of Drummond Street running west towards Regents Park.

The website of the Queen's Head & Artichoke Pub (Situated North of Great Portland Street tube station) is www.theartichoke.net. The address is 32 Albany Street London NW1 4EA.

We are aiming to have AT LEAST 30 barristers in their wigs and gowns this year and in order to encourage participation. All those who get back to me will have their name put in a raffle for a bottle of champagne! So if you are game and will be marching in your robes on 2nd July please email me at steveolue@gmail.com and your name will go in the hat!

This event is supported by the Bar Council. The Chairman of the Bar, Petter Lodder QC, has endorsed the event here.

Pre-Pride drinks will be held at the Law Society Six Clerks Bar on Chancery Lane on Friday from 18:00 until 20:00. A post-march party at Walkers of Whitehall will provide ample opportunity for networking and socialising.
